Ignite your Mind
Ignite your Mind…The Human Guidance System (HGS): Your Inner Healer
Out of all the technological advances in the past few years, the one that thrills us the most is the GPS system. Plug in any destination and the GPS unit gives you turn-by-turn instructions to get you there safely. If you stray off course, a calming voice kindly guides you back to the right path.
Brilliant!
You, as a human being, have the same system deep inside you. It’s called the Human Guidance System, or HGS. It’s our inner compass and it also gives you turn-by-turn instructions to your destination (your goal). It also kindly guides you back on course if you should ever stray.
The majority of us aren’t tuned into our HGS. We don’t hear the kind voice that offers turn-by-turn directions. We don’t tap into the power or the wisdom that can guide us to our destiny. Instead, we rely on happenstance and stumble through life, never really knowing if we’re on the right path.
Studies by the top universities in the world have suggested that people who are in touch with their HGS experience more peace, satisfaction, joy and success. In all our work with clients, we have seen that paying attention and listening to your HGS is the single most important factor in success.
Your HGS is there for a reason. It’s time to tap into its power.
How the HGS works
The conscious mind thinks a thought, emotionalizes that thought and sends it to the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind, using the RAS, triggers the HGS. The HGS, in turn, sends out signals like radio waves to the Universe, transmitting messages and attracting everything that validates the original thought.
Your HGS does not shout. Instead, it prefers to be quiet. It speaks to you in whispers. (The only time your HGS will let itself be known in a big way is if you’re in danger. Then, your HGS will shout and will do anything to get your attention.)
It is consistently giving you signs along your journey. You can feel its guidance in your body. It’s a feeling of peace or calm in your body or “gut” (below your breast bone). For negative experiences, you’ll feel a gnawing or a general uneasiness.
Practice makes perfect. The more you use your HGS, the easier it is to recognize when it’s speaking to you. You’ll be tuned-in and will immediately recognize the signs the Universe sends you. The more you recognize, the more the Universe sends.
Unlike the Backseat Drivers in your life, the HGS does not try to convince you of anything. It’s infinitely patient, always kind and waits until you’re ready to move forward before it puts the next step in your path. Your HGS doesn’t judge and is always working in your best interest.
Your HGS knows what is best for you and what you are ready for. Your HGS cannot be persuaded or convinced that your way is the better way, and it knows what it will take to prepare you and ready you in order to reach your goal, dream or desire.
Growth spurts: Every person walking the planet has had uncertain times. Recall a time in your life when you thought that you were going the wrong way, but went through the pain and growth anyways. After looking back on it, can you see why you had to go through the experience? (The HGS does not do things to you, but does things for you. Even the hard things you experience are meant to help you.)
You may be led to situations that feel right to you, but don’t make logical sense. Trust your HGS and follow its guidance. Ask your HGS if there’s a lesson, and, if so, what can you learn? Is it to strengthen your character, develop a new life skill or meet a new person who is important for the next step in your journey?
The HGS is designed to help you learn, grow and open new doors of opportunity for you. (That’s why it’s important that you Defrost your Rearview Mirror at times. You can see where you were, why you had to learn the lesson and why you did what you had to do.) So often, we try to set goals that bypass the necessary experiences. Those experiences are needed for you to ultimately become the person you’re meant to be.
Plug in your coordinates: Your HGS will give you turn-by-turn instructions the minute you plug in your coordinates and your goal. Tell your HGS where you want to go. Then sit back and listen. Without a goal, your HGS is on autopilot and your life will be run by happenstance instead of purpose.
You can choose to live your life on autopilot or you can live your life on purpose.
You have a choice.

Here is a great article on “Neurobics”: Exercises for your Brain
Neurobics: Exercises for Your Brain which Actually Grow New Dendrites
By David Bunnell
A form of mental exercises that combine the use of your senses in unexpected ways can get help you avoid the mental decline of old age.
Most people think that the mental decline that we go through as we get older is the result of the steady death of nerve cells. Actually, the real reason has to do with the thinning out of the number and complexity of dendrites, which are the branches on nerve cells.
Dendrites receive information from other nerve cells across connections called synapses. If you don’t regularly use these connections they can atrophy which will reduce your ability to remember new information as well as to retrieve old information.
The good news is that through a type of mental exercise called neurobics you can grow new dendrites and increase their complexity. At one time this was thought not possible because scientists believed only the brains of children were capable of growing dendrites. But in recent years, experiments at Duke University and other research centers have shown that even old brains have a remarkable capacity to grow, adapt, and change patterns of connections.
Lawrence Katz, who is a research neurobiologist at Duke, coined the term “neurobics” and created a series of mental exercises that will help you “rewire” your brain. These exercises don’t involve the usual things you might think of such as solving crossword puzzles or playing chess.
Instead, neurobics involves activities that present the brain with unexpected and novel experiences through the use of your physical senses such as vision, smell, etc., as well as your emotions. The object is to stimulate neural activity that create new connections between different neurons and cause your brain to produce neurotrophins, which are nutrients that can significantly increase the size and complexity of dendrites.
Doctor Katz refers to this as “cross-training your brain.” Some examples of what you can do include:
•When you wake up try smelling something different from the usual coffee such as vanilla, peppermint or rosemary. By linking a new aroma with your morning routine you will actually generate new neural pathways in your brain.
•If you are right-handed, use your left hand to brush your teeth, comb your hair, shave, etc. Using your nondominant hand for routine activities, which you can do throughout the day, is another way of generate neural pathways.
•Close your eyes while you shower to stimulate your tactile senses. Do this with other routines throughout the day.
•Turn the photos on your desktop or shelf upside down.
•Learn the Braille numbers for the various floors in the elevator at your apartment or office.
•Create a “sensory canister” containing aromatic items like sage, thyme or cloves. When you dial a phone number take a whiff and see if you can remember the number.
•Break your routine by driving a different way to work or by going to a different supermarket or eating in a different ethnic restaurant. Try to continuously experience new sights, sounds and aromas.
•Challenge yourself. If you happen to be in a different country during your vacation, rent a car and drive to small town where they don’t speak your language and spend a night in a local bed-and-breakfast.
Once you get the concepts of neurobics you can easily come up with new exercises—just remember that it must be an activity that involves one or more of your senses in a novel way which engages your attention and challenges you. Or, you could read Lawrence Katz’s book, Keep Your Brain Alive, which includes a list of 83 neurobic exercises.
